Description
The Aesculus hippocastanum is a tree in the family of Sapindacee and is native of Eastern Europe. The tree can grow up to 25 meters tall, it has a dense foliage crown with bright green leaves on top and light green leaves at the bottom. The fruits, known as horse chestnuts are covered with sharp spines and enclose 1 to 4 nuts rich in Aescin.
Notes
In some areas of Italy horse chestnuts are also called “Indian horse chestnuts” or “crazy horse chestnuts”. It is custom to take one nut with oneself since it is believed to be an amulet that protects against colds.
