Macadamia ternifolia seed oil
Cosmetic function
Oil obtained from the cold pressing of macadamia nuts. It an oil that is particularly rich in unsaturated fatty acids, particularly oleic, palmitoleic, linoleic and linolenic acid. It also contains an unsaponifiable part rich in phytosterols which guarantees good resistance to the processes of oxidisation. This is why it is able to protect the skin from the action of the sun and wind, maintaining a stable level of hydration. It feels like a very light oil and its particular composition in fatty acids is very similar to that of natural sebum. Consequently it is very easily absorbed by the epidermis and is easy to apply, without leaving the skin greasy. Macadamia oil is an excellent moisturiser and emollient, and is particularly suitable for dull, dry or very mature skins.
Description
An evergreen tree belonging to the Proteaceae family, originating from the South-eastern forests of Australia, but now cultivated in different parts of the world. The plant can reach up to 12 metres tall and cannot be exploited before the age of 7 to 10 years. However, when it begins producing fruit, it can be used for up to 100 years. The nut from which the oil is extracted is contained inside a particularly hard brownish shell.
Notes
The name comes from Dr John Macadam, the Australian colleague of the botanical scholar Ferdinand von Mueller, who discovered Macadamia nuts.
