TEA TREE
Melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil
Cosmetic function
The essential oil is obtained by steam distilling Tea tree leaves and twigs. It is characterised by an intense, spicy-herbaceous perfume (top note) and has evident antibacterial, anti-mycotic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, purifying, anti-acne and sebum-balancing, toning and healing properties. It is an essential oil that is particularly suitable for impure or acneic skins, to fight excessive sweating and for intimate cleansing.
Description
A fairly small tree belonging to the Mirtaceae family, typical of Australia, it is characterised by the contrast between the dark green colour of the leaves and the white bark, from which its name originates (from the Greek mèlas -anos, "black" and leukòs, "white"). The flowers are white and arranged in bunches, while the leaves are linear.
Notes
It was given the name "Tea tree" by Captain James Cook in 1770 when, upon arrival in Australia, he drank a spicy aromatic beverage containing Tea tree leaves and mistaking it for an infusion of tea (hence the name “Tea tree”). According to ancient beliefs, Tea tree essential oil helps to eliminate confusion and to cope with difficult situations directly.
